Radio review: Gabby Logan

Gabby Logan (5 Live) was talking food allergies yesterday in the health feature, then sleep patterns and having surgery abroad. Staycation has a new meaning, apparently: you have your cosmetic procedure overseas, then stay there until the evidence disappears.

The panel busted health myths and answered questions crisply. Logan (pictured) was good with the callers, especially a woman who is allergic to almost everything. "You sound incredibly chirpy," Logan told her, "given the restrictions in your life". "I now have a lovely fiance," she said, "and that helps."

This show now works well. It felt a bit light at first, sandwiched between the often powerful material in Victoria Derbyshire's programme and Richard Bacon's exuberant afternoon offering, but actually functions rather neatly as a chatty, busy bridge between the two.

The team banter is cheerful, but not annoyingly so, and it's a useful layer, integrating the very different moods and topics the show embraces. Yesterday, Logan also covered news and business updates, an England football press conference, and a moving interview with the mother of a teenager apparently killed by carbon monoxide poisoning in Castlerock. She also tackled the vogue for flash push-bikes among men in midlife crises. "The all gear and no idea category," said one unimpressed long-time cyclist.
